I Feel Pretty (Make-up Rehearsal)

We decided that we didn’t want to have makeup on our actors and actresses. We wanted our actors to feel free to paint their face however they saw their character fit. For instance, Diana wore a very cute pinkish lip gloss which I thought gave her character a more innocent and kind look. She is supposed to stand out, not only to Otis, but to the audience. She curled her hair and wore very large and retro looking glasses. We gave her a little bit of eye shadow to make her blue eyes pop a little bit more. She purposely stands out from the rest of the neutral characters in the scene with her hair, make up and wardrobe.

Rehearse for Hours

We took advantage of the fact that most our cast is in drama and they had to stay late for something taking place that afternoon. So we regrouped and showed them our test footage. They understood what their role was and went over it a few times. We discussed with them their cues which they practice repeatedly. We used our courtyard for the beach and reenacted the entire film. We also improvised with our hands where the camera would be positioned and how they should stand. It was very beneficial to have a rehearsal so that when we actually got to the beach everyone knew exactly what it was they were doing and when. We hustled!

Technical Difficulties

Our rough deadline was March 7 however, even though we were done filming we still had a lot of editing to do. Which lead to us extending our deadline. We ended up turning in our movie March 18. It was important to extend our date because we wanted to make sure everything was done correctly. In addition, some things took longer then expected. For example, for the editing, we had to learn more about the program in order to get into editing our film. We also took a while recording voice over for our leads Andy and Bayardo for some days they were absent from school or couldn’t get out of class to be able to record.

That’s a Wrap Baby!

We finally filmed all the footage for our movie. We went through some obstacles but other than that it was a success. Everyone from the cast showed up as well as some random teens who thought it would be cool to join in on the fun. They added to the crowd and were also dressed the part by being in vibrant colors. Diana, Andy, and Bayardo did an outstanding job at portraying their characters memorizing their cues and being very disciplined. The only problem we ran into was that there was an excessive amount of wind which corrupted the audio we had intended to use such as ambient sounds or dialogue. When we would playback the audio, nothing was audible and we figured that we would most likely have to edit the audio when we had the chance to do editing. We would have to add the extra step of looking up non copyrighted ambient sounds.

Another situation we also rand into was the weather. It was raining cats and dogs up until we actually arrived at the beach. Then, the day changed significantly. We were so glad. All in all it was a successful filming day!

Variety of Visual Effects

In our movie, we wanted to make sure that the beginning appears like some sort of dream sequence. Our main character is fantasizing about being with his long time crush so a challenge we faced was trying to differentiate between his fantasy and his reality. We added some vignette effects around the corners to make it look mystical. In addition, we added a pink/ orange filter color on the footage to make it seem vibrant. This adds on the the 80s theme as well, which we tried to keep consistent throughout the movie. This was crucial because if not it would look like an ordinary film.

Finale Script!!!

Here is the final script that we used for our movie. It had a few minor changes from the rough draft, but it was still the same concept and plot.

Testing… Testing 1,2,3

Before recording our movie we had to make sure that not only was the camera working properly, but also block some of the movements and make sure the actors knew their cues. I made a little trailer with scenes I had recorded as test footage as well as getting very fun and vibrant shots that I will incorporate into the movie.

Get in loser, we’re editing!

Last week during class we went in depth about the different aspects of editing. Editing is part of the post production of a film. Editing techniques can create an expansion of time in films. So we had to learn about different techniques and begin to plan on which we would use for our movie. We had to take into consideration that our transitions need to be smooth and make sense with the plot. Since our intro takes place in a dream sequence we wanted to use fade in/out to make it seem psychedelic and dreamy. There is also a scene where Diana is beckoning Otis to come over so we might use slow motion to make her movements seem more sensual and dream like. Cut was also a good transition to use because since it’s a dream it needs to be curt and go from moment to moment. We also used eyeline match to demonstrate Otis (Andy) following Diana or going towards her or her telling him to come over. Finally, a smash cut will be used to demonstrate Otis waking up from his dream going into reality. He would be waking up disturbed.

We used premier pro to be able to edit and mash up the scenes together. We wanted to focus on transitions that would correspond with a conversation.

Character Bios for movie Sandlove

Otis- is an average high school student trying to get by. His hair is dark brown, which seems black, his cheeks are covered in freckles and he has very light skin that looks almost pale. He isn’t your ideal heart throb, but there’s a certain awkward cuteness to him that makes him approachable. Otis keeps to himself most of the time and is a sweet guy. Otis is extremely intelligent and enjoys reading and watching movies. He is humorous and can have fun and let loose if he allows himself too. However, Otis is very anxious and is usually the one taking care of his best friend Josh when things get out of hand. Otis struggles to talk to girls, but is very considerate of the few friends he has and truly appreciates them. He spends his days fantasizing about being with his best friends’ girlfriend, Diana. Otis refers to himself as ordinary and feels as though a girl like Diana could never love him.

Josh- is confident and an overachiever. He has floppy brown hair and is moderately fit and handsome. High school has been his prime time and he fears the real world because he won’t be the king out there like he is at school. He met Otis in elementary and they have been friends ever since. Otis is the only guy to know his deepest darkest secrets so no matter what societal status he lands on he will always be best friends with Otis. Otis knows the real Josh. However, as much as Josh loves Otis like a brother, he does get frustrated with him sometimes because of his very bashful and insecure nature. He wants Otis to grow and widen his horizons. Josh is ambitious and a risk seeker which is why Diana is attracted to him. He is confident and doesn’t let anyone tell him what to do.

Diana- she is beautiful and kind. She has short curly brown hair, blue eyes and fair skin. Ever since middle school she has been in love with Josh. He had helped her learn to play the guitar in band and ever since then they have been inseparable. Getting close with Josh meant getting close with Otis which wasn’t a problem because Diana gets along with everyone. She cares about Otis like a brother and loves Josh like a future husband.
