So Many Genres to Chose From…..

Today we had to decide and organize our groups for our final movie project. I will be working side by side with Emily Suarez, Gabriela Diaz and Natalie Guzman. We all had different interpretations of what kind of movie genre we wanted to do the intro to. We all wanted to do something fun and youthful. We decided on doing a hybrid of genres, mixing both beach party and romance together. We all love teen beach movie and thought we could do something upbeat.

Genre: refer to the type or category of film that has its own conventions and stock characters.

Genre we chose: beach party/romance

Setting: America’s, 80’s time frame

Intended Venue: Movie theater

Intended Audience: Teenagers and young adults

Cast: a male lead and female lead undecided

There are three movie examples that we would base our movie off of. These movies are Beach Party (1963), Blue Hawaii (1961), and Teen Beach Movie (2013).

There will be Composition

In film, the composition refers to the frame of the image as well as its elements from the mise-en-scene.

Rule of Thirds:

  • A basic composition principle is known as Rule of Thirds. To apply this rule one must imagine/divide the frame with two vertical and two horizontal lines, creating points of interest due to the intersection of the lines.

Lead Room:

  • When a character is facing frame left, then he should be placed frame right. This creates a more comfortable image for the audience. The subject is looking at the open space in front of them which is known as lead room.

Static Composition:

  • Compositions where the image seems symmetrical because the majority of the lines are horizontal and vertical create a soothing and tranquil feel. Static lines make the eyes of the viewer move smoothly across the image.

Dynamic Composition:

  • Composition where the image has many diagonal lines and seems out of sorts is dynamic. There are many aspects when looking at a dynamic composition because the image can seem symmetric yet still feel overwhelming to the viewer.

Density:

  • Density contributes to how compact the image seems. All the components within the image that make it seem open, close, tight, or loose is density.
  • Depth also correlates with density because depth is the back ground and foreground of the image.
  • Actors, costumes, props, set, lighting and etc are elements needed to determine the frames density as well as mise-en-scene.

Subsidiary and Dominant Contrasts:

  • Dominant contrast is where your eyes go first when viewing an image where as, subsidiary contrasts is the second place your eyes travel to.
  • Character placement also corresponds with this. A character can be on the top of the frame or on the bottom.

Journey to the center of my mini film

For an assignment I was told to get into a group and create a mini film that consisted of at least 3 shots. My group and I decided to first plan the plot of our mini film, which consisted of a girl finding out her grandfather passed away. We then wrote down each shot used for each scene, including insert shots, reaction shots, and establishing shots. We made sure to correlate our scenes with the reasoning for our shots. The reaction shot was used to demonstrate the actresses emotion when finding out this horrifying news. Insert shot to establish importance of object which on our case was a letter. Then, we used establishing shot to identify location. We didn’t do this in that order but that was part of the planning deciding the order of the film’s plot and shots. Filming was exciting and to add some spice to the cinematic structure we made it black and white. The production as a whole came out pretty decent and had a nice flow to it.

Knowledge is cool

I’ve learned a lot so far being in this class. We’ve gone into depth about the terminology used in film, such as the differences between shots, angles and takes. We have been able to watch scenes from movies and pin point each type of shot. I’ve never been able to do that before. I’m also able to identify what will happen next based on the shot taken by the director for the scene. This experience has been great. I’m able to take notes and then test my knowledge with the use of examples provided to me and quizzes. I feel comfortable learning in this class because it’s always a discussion about interesting topics. It’s always a question of ‘why did the director do this’ and ‘what is he trying to tell the viewer’. Here are questions I never thought of asking myself before while watching a movie. I love watching behind the scenes of movies and now I can truly understand what the behind the scenes truly entails.

Intro to a Sardines

Hi, my name is Amanda Sardiñas and this is my blog, “When Amanda Met Film”. I chose this name because my favorite movie is “Forrest Gump”….. just kidding it’s “When Harry Met Sally”. I love sitting at home with my family and watching movies. Movies have truly influenced me and that’s what brought me to this class. I love watching and analyzing films. I enjoy doing things like performing because of it as well. This is my first year being class president for my junior class. I also do cheer and drama at school which is very Troy Bolton meets Gabriela Montez. I’m very excited to go on this new journey and be able to write about it on this blog!
